Volkswagen Golf 2020 design revealed: new tech, faster look for 8th-gen model

The new Volkswagen Golf has been revealed, well in sketch form, ahead of the car’s official unveiling in two weeks.

The eighth-generation of VW’s top-selling hatch was expected to make its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show, but it is thought the company didn’t want it to steal attention from the brand’s ID.3 electric car (and vice versa, for that matter).

Instead, the all-new Golf will be shown on October 24 in Wolfsburg Germany, with VW promising more tech, more connectivity and a “more dynamic design” than ever before.

That said, we’re hardly talking a revolution of design here. The first official sketches do show a vehicle that, while graced with giant wheels and a raked windshield, still looks very much like a Golf.

Exactly the intention, says VW, with today’s images accompanied by press material promising the new Golf will be “sporting a highly expressive design” that’s still “instantly recognisable as a Golf from all sides”.

Inside, though, the cabin is will be home to a new digital cockpit, which means its goodbye analogue dials in the driver’s binnacle, and will form part of a  “digitalised and connectivity-oriented interior”.

Under the skin, there’s new suspension tech for a sportier, more agile drive, as well as new engines, some of which are expected to be at least partly electrified.

As reported previously, we’re expecting the new Golf to land in Australia in the second half of 2020.
