Toyota Yaris 2020: Hybrid Mazda2 rival will be Australia’s most fuel-efficient car ever (without a plug…)

Toyota has released the impressive fuel economy figures for its incoming Yaris, with the all-new city car to drink a claimed 3.3 litres per hundred kilometres on the combined cycle. 

And that’s impressive. Enough to beat even the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid, which drinks a claimed 3.4L/100km. In fact, our numbers have the Yaris as Australia’s most fuel-efficient car without a plug, so ruling our plug-in hybrid vehicles.

That number refers specifically to the hybrid powertrain; a 1.5-litre petrol engine combined with a battery and electric motor to drive down fuel use. 

Power numbers are yet to be officially confirmed, but we’re expecting that engine/battery combination to deliver some 74kW and 169Nm (the same outputs as the now-discontinued Prius C).
