Toyota 86 2020 gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto update in the US, no word for Australia yet

Versions of the Toyota 86 sports coupe will get a “TRD” handling package in the United States, featuring a new 7.0-inch multimedia offering with essential phone mirroring connectivity.

The TRD (Toyota Racing Development – now a defunct badge in Australia) package features a brand new 7.0-inch screen (up from our locally-delivered car’s 6.1-inch screen) with a more slimline design.

While it will gain Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, it notably loses a volume adjustment dial in favour of buttons.

The new screen looks to be a significant upgrade from the 6.1-inch unit currently available. The new screen looks to be a significant upgrade from the 6.1-inch unit currently available.

The TRD version in the US adds a slew of performance features that are already available on the 86 range in Australia – including Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers – as well as a new 18-inch alloy wheel design.

Toyota’s local arm was not able to confirm any updates to the 86 for the 2020 model year at this time but noted that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are gradually being rolled out across the rest of the brand’s range as it becomes available.

The 86 last received a mild update for the 2018 model year, and although its future was questioned with the recent release of the A90 Supra it has been confirmed for a second-generation alongside its Subaru BRZ twin.

Australia also recently missed out on the limited Hakone special edition made available in the US market.
