Tesla Model 3 2019 nabs another top safety award

Tesla’s most affordable vehicle, the Model 3 mid-size sedan, has been given the top safety award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as a result of strong crash testing results.

With full five-star scores in North America, Europe and Australian crash testing, the Model 3 has now been presented with the highest achievement possible from the IIHS, becoming only the second all-electric vehicle behind the Audi e-tron to be awarded.

To qualify for the award, the IIHS assessed the latest Tesla across eight categories including crashworthiness, occupant protection, crash avoidance and headlight systems.

Across all tests, the Model 3 scored top marks.

“Vehicles with alternative powertrains have come into their own,” IIHS boss David Zuby said. “There’s no need to trade away safety for a lower carbon footprint when choosing a vehicle.”

Meanwhile, Tesla said: “The safety of our customer is what matters most, which is why our active safety features and passive safety equipment come standard on all our cars.

“We’re also committed to making our cars even safer over time via over-the-air updates, helping us ensure that all Tesla drivers have access to the best safety features available for their cars,” Tesla said.

Tesla’s Model 3 launched in Australia last month and is available in three grades – Standard Range Plus, Long Range and Performance – starting from $66,000 before on-road costs.
