Skoda Scala Monte Carlo 2020 revealed: Corolla-rivalling small car gets ‘sportier’ look

Skoda has revealed a new trim level for its incoming Skoda Scala small car, which is expected to launch in Australia in the second quarter of 2020.

When the Scala hits local showrooms, it will be positioned between the Czech brand’s Fabia light car and Octavia mid-sizer, however, exact pricing and specifications have yet to be confirmed.

CarsGuide understands that Australian-spec Scalas will be powered exclusively by a Volkswagen-sourced 1.5-litre TSI engine producing 110kW/250Nm, matched with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The vehicle is also expected to be priced somewhere above the $25,000 mark, positioning it in Mazda3 (from $25,990 for base auto) and Toyota Corolla ($24,370) territory – two top-sellers in the category.

The sporty design enhancements continue inside, with red accents and aluminium-look pedal covers.

Skoda has this week revealed a high-spec Monte Carlo grade for the Scala, before its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show later this month.

It has yet to be confirmed if the Monte Carlo will make the Australian Scala line-up, although the trim level is compatible with the 1.5-litre TSI engine, and Skoda’s local wing has offered Monte Carlo variants on other models.

“With the new Monte Carlo version, we are putting even greater emphasis on the Skoda Scala’s sporty and dynamic character,” said Skoda head of design Oliver Stefani.

Named after the famous Monte Carlo Rally, at which Skoda has had some success, the Scala Monte Carlo gains a number of gloss black features to give it a sportier presence.

“The black Monte Carlo features, large alloy wheels and the storied name establish a link with our successful rally vehicles and are even more specifically designed for a younger target audience which appreciates sportiness and an emotive, lifestyle-focused design” said Mr Stefani.

Specifically, the new grade brings a darkened grille and full-LED headlights, a redesigned front apron, unique badging, unique 17-inch alloy wheels, as well as black wing mirror caps and side sills.

On the inside, the Monte Carlo features height-adjustable sports seats with exclusive upholstery, perforated leather with red accents on the steering wheel, shifter and handbrake lever, new chrome trim pieces, aluminium pedals and black roof lining.
