New VW T-Cross 2020 to launch with near-perfect adult safety: ANCAP

Volkswagen Australia is about to launch one of the safest new models on the market, with the eagerly anticipated T-Cross small SUV to enter showrooms with a five-star rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

ANCAP will carry the T-Cross’ rating across from its European sibling, Euro NCAP, which gave the Polo-based small SUV five stars in May 2019. As such, it was assessed in conjunction with the superseded 2018-2019 safety standards.

Either way, the T-Cross was close to perfection in testing, scoring 97 per cent in the Adult Occupant Protection category, including perfect scores for the Side Impact and Pole Oblique crash tests.

The small SUV also scored 85 per cent in the Child Occupant Protection category, including full marks in the Dynamic (Side) crash test.

Furthermore, the T-Cross scored 81 per cent and 80 per cent in the Vulnerable Road User Protection and Safety Assist categories, including flawless records for the Lower Leg Impact and Seat Belt Reminders tests respectively.

Critically, ANCAP’s five-star rating applies to all three of the T-Cross’ Australian variants (entry-level 85TSI Life, mid-range 85TSI Style and flagship 110TSI Style).

As reported, the T-Cross goes on sale this month, with Volkswagen Australia announcing in January that the small SUV will be priced from $27,990 plus on-road costs.
