New Volkswagen Golf GTI to be revealed in March: Iconic hot hatch to score 213kW flagship!

The Volkswagen Golf GTI will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March, with the German brand’s iconic hot hatch to arrive some two months ahead of its Golf R sibling.

That’s the word from VW in Europe, where executives have confirmed timing for the MK8 iteration of one of the world’s most famed sports cars.

According to reports in the UK’s AutoCar, the eighth-gen Golf GTI has abandoned earlier plans to adopt an electrified powertrain, and will instead be launched with an updated 2.0-litre turbo engine, offered with two power outputs overseas – 180kW and 213kW – and paired with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. You can also expect a sprint to 100km/h in less than 6.0 seconds.

In Australia, the more powerful engine would most likely appear in a performance flagship model, like the current-generation GTI TCR (213kW of power and 400Nm of torque) which is confirmed for an Australian launch this year.

International reports suggest the GTI reveal will be followed by the unveiling of the Mk8 Golf R, said to planned for two months later.
