New Toyota Yaris 2020 specs detailed: Mazda 2 rival to offer petrol and hybrid in revamped range

Toyota Australia has confirmed specification – but not pricing – for the fourth-generation Yaris light hatch, which is due in showrooms in August.

As reported, the Yaris will usher in a hybrid powertrain for the first time – prompting the discontinuation of the similarly sized Prius C – and now we know its peak combined power output: 85kW.

The Yaris will also be available with a petrol engine once again, although the new model will debut an 88kW 1.5-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder unit that outpowers its 1.3-litre four-cylinder predecessor by up to 25kW.

Fuel consumption on the combined-cycle test (ADR 81/02) will be 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres for the hybrid, while the petrol will use 4.9L/100km when paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

As before, Toyota Australia will offer the Yaris in three grades, with the mid-range SX and flagship ZR carrying over, while the entry-level Ascent will be replaced by the Ascent Sport.

The former two will be available in CVT-only hybrid and petrol forms, while the latter will be exclusively offered in petrol guise and will come with the option of the aforementioned CVT or a six-speed manual transmission.

Standard equipment in all Yaris variants will include LED daytime running lights, a 7.0-inch touchscreen multimedia system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, a USB port and a front-centre airbag.

Advanced driver-assist systems will extend to front autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with junction assist and pedestrian (day and night) and cyclist (day) detection, lane-keep assist, speed sign recognition and a reversing camera.

Unique to the Ascent Sport will be 15-inch steel wheels, while the SX will add LED headlights and tail-lights, 15-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, satellite navigation, a leather-accented steering steering wheel and piano-black and satin interior trim.

The ZR will also pick up 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, a head-up display, sports seats with red inserts, sports pedals, paddle-shifters (petrol only), piano-black interior trim, rear AEB, blind-spot monitoring and front and rear parking sensors.

Buyers of the Mazda2 rival will have the choice of 12 paintwork options, with ZR customers also getting the option of a black or white roof with selected colours.
