New Mazda CX-5 2020 pricing and spec detailed: Toyota RAV4 rival refreshed

Mazda Australia’s new CX-5 crossover will land in local showrooms in March with updates to keep it fresh against the ever-competitive mid-size SUV cohort.

However, the changes will come with slight range-wide price increase, with the base Maxx rising $100 and the remaining variants up $200.

As such, the new line-up kicks off at $30,980 before on-road costs for the front-wheel-drive (FWD) 2.0-litre petrol manual Maxx, with the automatic version wearing a $32,980 pricetag.

The Maxx grade can also be had in all-wheel-drive (AWD) 2.5-litre auto form for $35,980.

Buyers have a choice of three automatic-only Maxx Sport versions, an FWD 2.0-litre petrol, AWD 2.5-litre petrol and AWD 2.2-litre diesel priced at $36,290, $39,290 and $42,290 respectively.

The mid-tier AWD and automatic-only Touring is available with the 2.5-litre petrol engine for $40,980 or the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel for $43,980.

GT variants are also available in 2.5-litre petrol ($46,090) and 2.2-litre diesel ($49,090) forms, but add the option of a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol engine for $48,590.

Finally, the top-spec Akera mirrors the GT’s engine choices, with the 2.5-litre petrol, 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and 2.5-litre turbo-petrol priced at $48,330, $51,330 and $50,830 respectively.

The most significant update to the new CX-5 is a new ‘Off-Road Traction Assist’ system included in all AWD grades, which can lock the rear differential and distribute torque accordingly to each corner.

All variants also gain an upgrade autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system with night-time pedestrian detection, as well as NVH improvements.

Maxx grades now benefit from a larger 8.0-inch multimedia display, paddle shifters are standard on Maxx Sport grades and up, and vehicles fitted with the 2.5-litre petrol engine gain a cylinder deactivation display in the MZD Connect multimedia display.

Powertrain outputs remain as before, with the 2.0-litre petrol developing 115kW/200Nm, the 2.5-litre petrol outputting 140kW/252Nm, the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel pushing 140kW/450Nm and the 2.5-litre turbo-petrol hitting 170kW/420Nm.

Equipment also carries over, including lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, G-Vectoring Control Plus and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity as standard.
