The point of entry for the Mazda2 light car has increased by nearly $5500 thanks to the removal of the base Neo hatchback and sedan in model year 2020 form.
Now kicking off at $20,990 before on-road costs for renamed manual G15 Pure, the base light car is a direct successor to last year’s mid-tier Maxx grade with equivalent pricing only moving the new Mazda2 up $2660.
An automatic version of the G15 Pure can also be had, priced at $22,990 (+$2660) for both hatch and sedan body styles.
The mid-tier auto- and hatch-only G15 Evolve is priced at $24,490, which is a $1100 increase over the preceding Genk variant.
Topping the range, once again, is the exclusively automatic $25,990 G15 GT, which increases in price by $1590.
However, to justify the price increases, Mazda has added more standard equipment to its light car range, including 15-inch alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-compatible multimedia system, blind-spot monitoring, G-Vectoring Plus torque control, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
Other gear fitted to the most affordable Mazda2 includes cruise control, LED headlights, hill start assist, lane departure warning, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, while the Evolve gains traffic sign recognition.
Top-spec GT grades add pick up a surround-view monitor, adaptive cruise control and front parking sensors to the list of equipment.
Inside, the Pure is kitted out with brown cloth interior, while the Evolve sports a dark navy colour and the GT gains blue-grey leather with synthetic suede.
Powering the updated Mazda2 is a revised 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 82kW of power and 144Nm of torque – an increase of 1kW/3Nm.
From the outside, the 2020 Mazda2 sports revised front and rear bumpers, while the grille and alloy wheel designs have also been refreshed.
Like all new Mazda models, the Mazda2 comes with a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and will hit local showrooms in early 2020.
