New Lexus IS 2021 detailed: BMW 3 Series rival scores new looks and fresh tech

Lexus has ripped the covers off its new IS, revealing updated styling and boosted technology for the mid-size sedan that will land in Australian showrooms in late 2020.

From the outside, the new IS can be easily recognised by its new rear end, which features fresh tail-lights that are now connected, a large diffuser and sculpted bootlid.

The front is also revised, though more subtly, thanks to new headlights, grille and bonnet.

Step inside and occupants will spot a 10.3-inch multimedia screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, as well as new surface finishes and high-end dash materials.

New safety technologies include more advanced versions of its lane-keep assist, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking systems, which are better able to keep the IS in lane and detect incoming traffic at intersections.

Underneath, the IS scores reinforced radiator supports and other handling improvements, to deliver what the brand is calling “Lexus Driving Signature”, or a more natural driving feel.

Engines available will include hybrid 300h, which pairs a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and electric motor.

A 2.0-litre turbo-petrol is also available in 300 guise, while the top-spec 350 will score a 3.5-litre V6 – both paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Outputs are yet to be revealed, but the current line-up outputs start at 164kW/221Nm for the 300h, 180kW/350Nm for the 300 and 233kW/378Nm for the 350.

Full pricing and specification details will also be revealed closer to launch, but for reference the current IS line-up kicks off at $59,340 before on-road costs and tops out at $74,022.
