New Honda Civic Type R 2020 made more ‘fast and furious’ by Mugen

Renowned Honda tuners Mugen have applied their trade to the 2020 Civic Type R, offering bolt-on parts to turn the already-Power Rangers-like styling of the stock hot hatch to full-on Megazord levels.

Adding a number of exterior enhancements, the Mugen Civic Type R wears a jutting front splitter, extended side skirts and a larger rear diffuser for a more aggressive road presence.

Buyers can also opt for front bumper garnishes to block off parts of the foglight surround for a more streamlined and angular look, as well as an extended roof spoiler made in part with carbon-fibre.

If these additions are still too subtle, a vented bonnet and attention-grabbing rear wing can also be optioned – both finished in carbon-fibre, and designed to dissipate heat and turbulent air respectively.

Aerodynamically optimised carbon-fibre side mirror covers are also on offer, but to cap off the exterior styling, Mugen serves up lightweight 20-inch forged wheels with unique sizing for the front and rear axles to maximise performance in the front-drive Civic Type R.

Tucked behind the wheels, Mugen also offers a set of up-rated brake pads that resist fade.

Parts are also available for the Civic Type R interior, including Mugen-branded door protectors, Alcantara-clad bucket seats, a short shifter, customised gear knobs, a Mugen start/stop button, scuff plates and unique floor mats.

Owners can also opt for a Mugen-branded carbon-fibre steering wheel, which retains the airbag and multimedia controls.

The only performance modification available so far is a titanium exhaust system with dual outlets, rather than the stock three, though exactly how it changes engine outputs is currently unknown.

Mugen hasn’t presented any engine changes to the current Civic Type R, which uses a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine outputting 228kW/400Nm to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Pricing for Honda’s hot hatch is pegged at $51,990 before on-road costs in Australia, while the Mugen accessories range from about ¥10,000 ($A136) to ¥1,100,000 ($A14,922).
