New BMW 4 Series coupe 2021 pricing and specs detailed: Mercedes-Benz C-Class rival gets aggressive

BMW Australia has released pricing and specification details for the second-generation 4 Series coupe, which will enter showrooms in October.

Just like its predecessor, the new 4 Series coupe is available in three variants, with the M Sport package now standard on the entry-level 420i and mid-range 430i, both of which are once again rear-wheel drive.

The 420i is $4092 cheaper than before, at $70,900 plus on-road costs, while the 430i is $6400 dearer, at $88,900.

Both variants are motivated by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, which produces 135kW/300Nm (+30Nm) in the 420i and 190kW/400Nm (+5kW/50Nm) in the 430i.

Then there’s the flagship M440i, which starts from $116,900. It’s the all-wheel-drive successor to the rear-wheel-drive 440i that was priced $13,700 lower, and it draws power from a 285kW/500Nm (+45kW/50Nm) 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline six-cylinder engine.

Like before, all three variants are mated to an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Unsurprisingly, the M440i is the quickest of the trio in a straight line, sprinting from a standstill to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, although the 430i is just 1.3s off that mark, while the 420i is a further 1.7s behind.

Standard equipment in the 420i includes sports suspension, a sports body kit, LED headlights and tail-lights, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, a 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia system with voice control, satellite navigation with live traffic, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, digital radio, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger, power-adjustable front sports seats, a sports steering wheel with paddle-shifters, and black Sensatec leather and Alcantara upholstery feature.

Advanced driver-assist systems extend to the Driving Assistant package as well as high-beam assist, park assist, reversing assist, a reversing camera and parking sensors.

The 430i adds adaptive dampers, sports brakes, keyless entry and start, Vernasca leather upholstery, the Driving Assistant package and surround-view cameras.

Meanwhile, the M440i also picks up a rear limited-slip differential, adaptive laser headlights, a power-operated tailgate, Cerium Grey exterior trim, a sunroof, a Harman/Kardon surround-sound system, heated front seats, a Sensatec leather-trimmed dashboard and ambient lighting.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class rival is available with several option packages, including Driver Assistance (420i only), Visibility (420i and 430i only), Comfort (420i and 430i only), M Sport Plus (420i and 430i only) and M Carbon.
