New BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2020 pricing and specs detailed: Mercedes-Benz CLA rival adds mid-range variant
BMW has added a mid-grade variant to its 2 Series Gran Coupe range, offering a middle ground between the entry-level 218i and performance oriented M235i with which the Gran Coupe range launched with earlier this year.
Closer in its specification to the base three-cylinder 218i, the 220i adds a more powerful 2.0-litre engine, producing peak figures of 141kW and 280Nm. The brand says this will allow a 0-100km/h sprint in just 7.2 seconds.
It will use the same seven-speed dual clutch automatic as the rest of the range, but unlike the top-spec M235i, will remain front-wheel drive.
The new 220i variant wears a $53,990 before on-road costs pricetag, representing a $4000 jump over the base 218i, but still with clear airspace between it and the all-wheel-drive M235i which is priced from $72,990.
Standard equipment on the 220i includes a standard M Sport aesthetic package with matching cloth interior trim and leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, sports seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive suspension, 10.25 inch multimedia screen with Apple CarPlay, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a holographic head-up display, wireless phone charging bay, full LED front lighting and taillights, ambient interior lighting, as well as a 100W six-speaker audio system.
On the safety front, the 220i has as standard city-speed auto emergency braking (front and rear), lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
It also has an automatic parking assistant and reversing camera.
All BMWs including the 2 Series Gran Coupe are covered by a three-year warranty, and servicing can be paid in advance with ‘BMW Service Inclusive’ packages which can be chosen (and bundled in on finance) at the time of purchase.
The 220i is set to arrive in “late Q3 2020”.
