Mercedes-Benz CLA 2020 pricing and spec confirmed: Stylish AMG CLA35 lands with 225kW/400Nm

Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific (MBAP) has confirmed two more variants for its second-generation CLA range, with the coupe-style mid-size sedan to be available in warmed-over CLA250 and performance-focused AMG CLA35 guises from early next year.

Joining the entry-level CLA200 ($59,500 plus on-road costs) that went on sale three months ago, the mid-range CLA250 is priced from $68,800 – just $100 more than its predecessor despite its longer list of standard equipment.

The $83,400 AMG CLA35 is an all-new member of the CLA brigade, slotting underneath the ballistic AMG CLA45 S that is due in the first quarter of 2020 with a 310kW/500Nm knockout punch.

A 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine motivates the CLA250, producing 165kW of power and 350Nm of torque via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and the German brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

The AMG CLA35 ups the ante with a similar set-up, developing an extra 60kW/50Nm for a scant zero-to-100km/h sprint time of 4.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.

Standard equipment in the CLA250 includes 18-inch alloy wheels, an AMG Line body kit, gloss-black exterior trim, rear privacy glass, a power-operated panoramic sunroof, hands-free boot access, dusk-sensing headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

Joining the CLA line-up are the CLA250 and AMG CLA35. Joining the CLA line-up are the CLA250 and AMG CLA35.

Inside, a 10.25-inch touchscreen MBUX multimedia system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, DAB+ digital radio, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging, paddle-shifters, climate control, keyless entry and start, and Artico artificial-leather and Dinamica micro-fibre upholstery feature.

Advanced driver-assist systems extend to autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, high-beam assist, traffic-sign recognition, park assist and a reversing camera.

The AMG CLA35 picks up additional body stiffening, five drive modes (Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual), launch control, a bi-modal AMG exhaust system, adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels and upgraded brakes with four-piston callipers up front.

It also adds a flat-bottom AMG steering wheel, powered-adjustable front seats with heating, and two-tone Lugano leather upholstery.

MBAP says pricing and specification details for the AMG CLA45 S will be released closer to its launch date.
