Hyundai’s bold future vision

In the future, Hyundai doesn’t want to sell you a car.

Revealed as part of the South Korean giant’s new Strategy 2025 plan last week is an expansion into the mobility services space, specifically in Australia. Under the new vision Smart Mobility Services will be one of the two core business pillars for Hyundai, taking the focus of purely selling new cars and instead offering people the means to use the company’s cars in different ways.

The strategy document laid out its plans for this new avenue around the world, making specific mention of Australia.

“Strategy 2025 also details regional optimization for Smart Mobility Service,” the document read. “In the US, car sharing and robotaxi service demonstrations will capitalize on the anticipated commercialization of autonomous vehicles of SAE Level 4 or higher. In Korea, Asia, and Australia, Hyundai plans to enter the mobility service market by partnering with leading local players.”

While CarsGuide has contacted Hyundai head office for further explanation of what those plans involve, the local arm of the company has already been making moves. In October it announced a partnership with car subscription service, Carly and has invested in Car Next Door.

Carly allows users to pay a subscription fee and borrow a range of Hyundai models when required. In contrast, Car New Door allows owners to rent their car out, with Hyundai owners getting a discount on listing as part of the partnership.
